In my opinion, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and it is so close to Kalamata, really doable for a day trip by car. 

The name “Voidokilia” is derived from two Greek words: “vodi” which means oxen and “kilia” meaning circle.

The locals call this beach the belly of an ox as it resembles the shape of the belly of an oxen, making it unique compared to other beaches in Greece. 

With its crystal-clear waters, soft golden sand, and picturesque scenery, this beach has become increasingly popular among tourists seeking to unwind and soak up the Mediterranean sun.

I recommend you hike up nearby Palaiokastro Hill so you can enjoy breathtaking views over Voidokilia Bay while exploring ancient ruins dating back centuries ago.

Whether you’re interested in history or just looking for a unique site off-the-beaten path – Methoni Castle is definitely worth checking out!

I recommend you rent a boat from the port of Methoni and visit the island of Sapienza to elevate your experience.

Ancient Messene or Ancient Messini, is also known as the ancient city of Messinia.

Founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas after defeating the Spartans in the Battle of Leuctra, it served as an important centre for politics, commerce, and culture during its time. 

Overall Ancient Messene offers a glimpse into ancient Greek life with its impressive architecture and sophisticated infrastructure.

Its location on a hilltop provides breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside making it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts visiting Greece.

I recommend you also visit the small but interesting museum of Ancient Messene which is to be found just a little further from the site. Furthermore, you can see the pretty views from the restaurant Ithomi.

Day trip to Mystras Castle

This medieval fortress rests atop a hill overlooking the city of Sparta and played an important role in the region’s history for over 250 years. 

UNESCO World Heritage Site, today, Archaeological Site of Mystras is a popular touristic attraction and serves as an example of Byzantine architecture.

With its impressive walls, towers, and palaces still standing tall after centuries, Mystras Castle offers visitors a glimpse into Greece’s rich past and a chance to explore one of the country’s most fascinating landmarks.

I highly recommend you climb to the top of Mystras Castle to take in breathtaking views over Sparta, mountains and olive groves. Moreover, you can have a walk in the nearby town of Sparta.

Day Trip to Pylos

Pylos is renowned for its association with the Battle of Pylos, also known as the Battle of Navarino, a major event during the Greek War of Independence.

Spend the day in Pylos visiting the enchanting town, Navarino Bay and the New Castle of Pylos. It’s one of my favourite day trips from Kalamata for having a relaxed day at sea and a dinner with a view.

I suggest renting a car as this gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. 

One of the main advantages of renting a car in Kalamata is that it allows you to get off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that are not accessible by other means of transportation. 

Moreover, renting a car in Kalamata is relatively inexpensive compared to other European cities. The rental rates are affordable, and many companies are offering competitive prices. 

Another benefit of renting a car in Kalamata is that it saves time, unlike public transportation where you have to wait for buses or trains according to their schedules.
