Spetses can be reached via various means from different places.

Let’s check all the options to reach the island of Spetses in Greece.

Ferry Piraeus to Spetses

The most common way to reach Spetses from Athens is by taking a ferry.

These ferries depart from Piraeus, the main port of Athens.

The ferry from Piraeus to Spetses takes around 3 hours and you can choose between a hydrofoil (quicker way) or a catamaran.

Athens to Spetses

From Athens, you can reach the ports for the ferry or hydrofoil by car or taxi.

The journey is approximately 3 hours.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Athens to Kosta and then a water taxi to Spetses.

Ferries to Spetses

Porto Heli Spetses

If you happen to be in Porto Heli, a charming town on the Greek mainland, you can take a water taxi or a regular ferry to Spetses.

This is a great option if you are already exploring the Peloponnese or staying in Porto Heli.

Hydrofiol from Ermioni

If you’re looking for a quicker way to get to Spetses, hydrofoils are your choice.

They are high-speed vessels and can have you on the island in just 20 minutes.

If you’re looking to save time hydrofoils are the way to go.

Hydra, Poros to Spetses

Ferries run also from the islands of Hydra and Poros to Spetses.

Kosta to Spetses

This was the option we chose as we drove from Kalamata to the port of Kosta (just on the other side of Spetses).

We parked the car in the parking just next to the port for 6 euros a day and took a ferry.

On one way we took a ferry called Katerina Star and we returned with Spetses Express.

The tickets cost 3,50 euros per person and the journey took around 15 minutes.

There are also water taxis (around 30 euros per taxi) if you want to travel faster but it’s not worth the price, at least from Kosta port which is very close to Spetses.

Best Time to Visit Spetses

Choosing the best time to visit Spetses depends on your preferences and holidays.

The high season starts in March and ends in October. With that in mind, let’s discover what every season is like.

Spring

In spring the weather is mild and nature is in full bloom.

It’s a great time for outdoor activities, such as hiking and exploring the island on foot or by bike.

The sea is a bit cool for swimming, but it’s still a great season for enjoying the island’s beaches.

Spring peaks during Greek Orthodox Easter when there are religious events on the island.

Summer

Summer is the high tourist season in Spetses.

The weather is hot and sunny, and all tourist services are in full swing.

It’s the perfect time for swimming and enjoying the island’s best beaches.

Spetses also hosts various cultural events and festivals during the summer so you’ll have more cultural options.

On the other hand, the island can get crowded, and accommodation prices may be higher.

It’s advisable to book your accommodations well in advance.

Lastly, the hot weather can be intense, so be prepared for high temperatures.

Autumn

Autumn is a lovely time to visit Spetses, but I might be biased!

I visited at the end of October, which coincides with the end of the season.

Many shops and museums were open until the last day of October and looking forward to the quiet low season.

The water is still warm and there aren’t many tourists on the island, which gave us the feeling that the whole island belonged to us.

It’s a great period for outdoor activities without burning below the hot summer sun.

There are a few festivals happening in September and October which makes Spetses more lively. The most popular event is the celebration of Armata which commemorates the naval battle of 1822.

Furthermore, some businesses close down at the end of October so November might be a bit too quiet for you.

Winter

Winter is the quietest time on Spetses.

If you prefer tranquillity, this is the best time to visit. You’ll have the island almost to yourself.

The weather is cooler and rainier during the winter months and the sea is too cold for swimming.

Lastly, lots of seasonal restaurants and shops are closed but as there are 4.000 permanent residents, the island is still lively and you get to know a more familiar environment.

For such a small island, Spetses offers lots of activities and attractions!

The whole island’s road is 29 km in total which makes it doable to go around in a day.

Renting a bike or scooter gives you the freedom to stop along the way and swim in the many beaches Spetses has.

Bouboulina’s Museum is dedicated to the life and achievements of Laskarina Bouboulina, one of the key figures in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century.

Spetses Museum

The Museum of Spetses opened in 1938 and is hosted in the mansion of Hadjiyanni Mexi, a leader of the island and revolutionary during the Greek War of Independence.

Rent a Bike in Spetses

The island is a bicycle-friendly environment.

You can rent a bike from the port and explore the island at your own pace.

The scenic coastal roads and paths are perfect for cycling.

Rent a Scooter

Rent a scooter or a quad to explore the island motored. We rented from a place called Piaggio Stanathiotis Motorcycles for 2 days and cost us 60 euros.

We rented a scooter and enjoyed it a lot!

Rent a Boat in Spetses

Next, you can rent a boat or take boat tours.

This option allows you to visit hidden coves and experience the island from a different perspective.

Rental boat companies are available at the port.

Walk

Spetses Town and its surroundings are very pedestrian-friendly.
