How to Get to Málaga

By Air

Málaga has a well-connected airport (AGP), with many international flights, being the fourth biggest airport in Spain.

Málaga Airport is a modern and well-equipped transportation hub that brings travellers to the Costa del Sol.

The airport is located approximately 8 kilometres southwest of the city centre of Málaga. It is easy to get from Málaga airport to the city centre.

By Bus

Alternatively, you can reach Málaga by train or bus, enjoying scenic routes and saving on travel costs. The city is well-connected with other major cities in Spain.

In Spain, the primary and one of the most prominent national bus services is ALSA. In addition to domestic services, ALSA provides international connections to countries such as Portugal, France, Switzerland, and Belgium.

I think that due to the fame of Costa del Sol as a primarily beach destination, many forget or just don’t know how pretty the city is in the Christmas season.

And if you are travelling from northern European countries or even northern Spain, you´ll be grateful for those 17°C with sun.

I remember the first time I travelled back from the Netherlands to Málaga during Christmas, I was just toasting under the sun, taking in every drop of vitamin D I could. I even went to the beach! Although locals looked at me a bit strange, I couldn’t care less about their looks. If you live in a place where it is 0 degrees outside, you know exactly what I’m talking about!

You’ll see locals with thick winter jackets during winter, but don’t let that fool you. During the day you can wear your T-shirt or bikini at the beach if it’s sunny.

There is music and people come from everywhere to see the lights, especially on the first day they display them.

Shopping for Christmas presents is a nice excuse to explore the streets and boutique shops in the city centre, such as Calle Larios and its surrounding areas.

Nativity Scene at Town Hall

The Nativity Scene (Belén) is a cultural tradition in Spain that everybody visits at least once in December.

It is normally hosted in the Town Hall of the city and the Cathedral, although you might see some others in different smaller churches or places.

The display has many detailed figurines, recreating the biblical story of the birth of Jesus.

Eat grilled chestnuts

You know it’s winter when you smell grilled chestnuts! This is a popular winter snack in Spain when street vendors roast chestnuts in large drums, filling the air with their aroma.

Three Kings Parade (Día de los Reyes):

On the 6th of January, the whole country stops what they´re doing to join the parades and celebrate the Reyes, known as the Three King´s Day.

This is a traditional holiday which marks the end of the Christmas season. Stroll the streets and watch the grand parade.

They normally have a schedule so you can see what is their journey through the town and don´t miss them.

The Reyes will throw caramels and bomboons for the children and adults, so this is your chance to collect some sweets.

Enjoy the snow in the Sierra Nevada

January has enough snow to enjoy the snow and ski in the Sierra Nevada, just 130 kilometres (81 miles) by road from Málaga.

The Sierra Nevada Ski Resort is the place to be in January offering the winter wonderland we all know. It is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains and has many slopes for every skill level.
